The range consists of life stage formulas - puppy, adult, senior, weight-loss, allergy blend and a cat formula. The variations are designed to meet the individual needs of dogs and cats at different life stages with regard to level of growth, energy and nutrient requirements.
A simple understanding of nutrition is as follows: Meat provides protein (building blocks) and fats (stored energy/cell function), cereals provide carbohydrates (ready to use/every day energy), and vegetables provide vitamins (enzymes/cell function), minerals (mortar for the building blocks) and fibre (normal bowel function). During life the body requires varying amounts of each. From birth to maturity the requirement for protein and fats is high, to enable growth and development, vitamins and minerals are needed to support the growth, and energy to fuel the growth. As adults, the body needs only to maintain and regenerate itself and have energy for day to day function. As age progresses, activity levels fall, metabolism slows and regeneration decreases.
Puppies need more protein and more base nutrients and vitamins per feed to sustain their rapid growth rate, so the puppy formula allows for more meat per feed, and the mix has higher levels of yeast, calcium (to balance the meat), kelp, barley grass, lecithin, and vitamin C (especially important for breeds prone to HD and other growth problems).
The adult formula is designed to fill the day to day needs of the average dog with regard to protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre and vitamins and minerals, and has a lower meat ration accordingly.

The mix is high in nutrient supplements to balance the small amounts used per meal, and has less vegetable matter and indigestible roughage and whole grains. Cats are obligate carnivores (must eat meat to live), unlike dogs, who can survive quite well on a well designed vegetarian diet, and so the meat ratios reflect this.
